Classroom Management

Luckily the most students I work with at a given time is 3, therefore I have some freedom and leniency with my classroom management techniques. Fortunately I am able to give attention to each of my students and have the luxury of a small group environment. However this can also serve as a struggle, I sometimes feel my students grow accustom to the amount of attention they have received which leads to an inability to be patient when my attention is not directly focused on them. I also have found that in such a small group setting I am not able to utilize as many classroom management techniques that would be more appropriate with a larger group of students. I have implemented strategies that allow my students to participate as well as show me whether or not they understand my directions and what is being asked of them. My favorite strategy has become “Thumbs up/Thumbs down” I utilize this to see if my students think an answer is correct, if they agree with an answer, if they are following along, or other quick attention grabbing questions seem appropriate. I wish I was able to do more partner collaborations but being that my amount of students is small and their disabilities can impede their ability to interact with their peers, this scenario can too be a struggle.
